Extend Your Growing Season

Using Mother Earth’s constant temperature and the Sun’s  light and heating capabilities, creative farmers are growing food year round. Expanding a growing season is a boon to self-sufficiency–the longer a garden patch can produce crops, the more food can be harvested and preserved.

I have a couple of questions about this project–does growing underground reduce the number of insect pests? Is there adequate light and heat for summer squash and tomatoes to both set and ripen fruit? How about beans and cucumbers?

I’ll have to learn more about the Walipini, or underground greenhouse. For now, I am impressed with the prospects.

I live where we get snow. That suggests the plastic used on this project would have to be replaced with more expensive rigid, transparent material. Maybe I could experiment on a smaller scale to start.
